Funky Dragon – Sustainable Development and Climate Change
Posted:20/02/2012
Funky Dragon are writing a report to the Welsh Government on what the children and young people of Wales know about sustainable development and the policies put forward by the Welsh Government on this issue. The Funky Dragon Sustainable Development and Climate change team will be visiting schools and youth groups in the local authority areas across Wales to encourage children and young people to participate in the survey. The views of children and young people are vital to report which will illustrate what the young people know of this issue.
Sustainable development is such a large concept that it can be difficult to define. The definition most widely used comes from the Brundtland Report 1987 which states ‘sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs’. Welsh Government is committed to including sustainable development in all aspects of its government and planning, this is ensures through the policy ‘One Wales: One Planet’.
Most scientists believe that rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere are responsible for raising average global temperatures, mainly through the greenhouse effect. CO2 is produced during everyday tasks like travelling by car, watching TV and using a computer. To realise the Welsh Government’s vision for One Wales: One Planet we need to start producing lower levels of CO2.
